Anthropic has introduced Claude Duet, a proactive AI agent designed to monitor connected workplace applications, identify important updates and complete tasks while users are away. Unlike a conventional chatbot that normally waits for a prompt, Claude Duet can notify users when something needs attention and continue working in the background.
The company opened a research preview of Claude Duet on October 21, 2026. Access is initially limited to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States who join the waitlist.

Claude Duet is a proactive AI agent from Anthropic that monitors connected work applications and completes tasks in the background. It is built around Claude Opus 5.5 and uses the memory, skills and connected applications associated with a user’s Claude account.
Each morning, Claude Duet can prepare a short briefing covering important developments across connected services. It can continue checking those applications during the day and contact the user when it identifies something that may require attention.
Users can also assign tasks through text or voice. Anthropic says these tasks may range from scheduling meetings and preparing communications to creating financial forecasts, building dashboards, developing prototypes and producing web applications.
Claude Duet operates through a cloud-based virtual machine with its own browser. Once a user assigns a task, the agent determines which connected applications and steps are required.
The work can continue even when the user’s computer or phone is switched off. Claude Duet sends a notification when the task is completed or needs the user’s review.
The agent does not monitor applications continuously. Anthropic says it checks connected accounts every few hours because constant monitoring would consume plan limits more quickly. Users can specify what information they want Claude Duet to monitor and how frequently they want updates.
Claude Duet can work with more than 6,000 connectors and plugins available through the Claude Marketplace.
According to Anthropic, the agent can:
Claude Duet can also help users make certain business purchases through Stripe’s Link digital wallet and Shopify’s Shop Pay. Purchases require confirmation before payment is completed.
Giving an AI agent access to email, financial tools and workplace applications introduces privacy and security risks.
Anthropic says Claude Duet does not directly see users’ passwords or authentication tokens. The company has also introduced protections intended to reduce unauthorized actions, prompt-injection attacks and the disclosure of sensitive information.
Claude Duet can read information, create drafts and prepare work independently. However, it must request approval before sending a message, making a payment, signing a document or deleting information.
A dedicated safety system is designed to prevent the sharing of highly sensitive data, including credit-card numbers and government identification. Certain actions remain prohibited even with approval, including trading securities or transferring money between financial accounts.
During the initial research preview, Claude Duet is available to Claude Pro and Max subscribers in the United States. It is included with these eligible subscriptions but shares the user’s existing Claude usage limits.
Background checks count toward those limits. Complex assignments, such as creating a financial model or presentation, may require multiple model interactions and consume more of the allowance.
Anthropic has not announced general availability for Team or Enterprise customers. The company has also not confirmed when Claude Duet will become available outside the United States.
Eligible US Pro and Max subscribers can join the research-preview waitlist through Anthropic’s official Claude Duet announcement.
Anthropic says it will contact eligible subscribers by email when the application is ready for them. Joining the waitlist does not guarantee immediate access.
Anthropic describes Claude Duet as an early product and acknowledges that it may misunderstand a conversation or incorrectly decide what requires urgent attention.
The current version is primarily designed for work. It is less capable at personal errands such as booking tickets, and users cannot yet view its browser while it completes a task.
These limitations make human review important, especially when the agent is working with customer communications, financial records or other sensitive business information.
Claude Duet joins a developing category of proactive agents that includes OpenAI Dots, Google Gemini Spark, Meta Muse and Microsoft Autopilot.
These products differ in audience, integrations, permissions and the types of actions they can perform. Anthropic is initially positioning Claude Duet around professionals and small-business workflows, supported by Claude’s existing memory, skills and connected applications.
Claude Duet reflects a broader movement from AI systems that generate answers toward agents that can monitor information, coordinate applications and perform multi-step work.
Proactive agents could help businesses reduce repetitive administration, identify overlooked tasks and connect workflows spread across different applications. Their practical value will depend on reliability, data access, integration quality and the safeguards placed around consequential actions.
Organizations exploring similar capabilities should begin with a limited, measurable process and define exactly when human approval is required. Wider access should be granted only after the agent’s accuracy, security and business value have been evaluated.
Spaculus Software’s AI development services include custom AI agents, intelligent automation and integration with existing business systems. Businesses considering agentic AI should focus on secure architecture, controlled application access and measurable operational outcomes rather than adopting autonomous tools without a defined use case.
Anthropic will use feedback from research-preview participants to improve Claude Duet before expanding availability. Important areas to watch include the accuracy of its notifications, consumption of plan limits, support for business subscriptions and access outside the United States.
Claude Duet’s long-term success will depend on whether it can consistently recognize priorities and complete cross-application tasks without creating excessive interruptions or unacceptable risks. For now, the product represents another significant step from reactive chatbots toward proactive AI agents that operate under human supervision.
